Home Remedies For Stiffness In Muscles

1. Therapeutic Exercise:

Dogs exercising or playing more are associated with a lower muscle stiffness score (on par with the benefits of NSAIDs). Dogs of all ages can develop muscle stiffness; however, it is often ignored in younger dogs. This is more prevalent in seniors, working dogs, athletic and large breeds.

A good rule of thumb is to take your dog for a 10-minute walk 2 or 3 times a day rather than one long walk. As enthusiasm and action release adrenaline and endorphins, exercising dogs may feel less pain. Gently massaging your dog’s sore spots will increase blood flow. Applying alternating heat and cold to the stiffened areas can also be beneficial.

2. Best Supplements For Stiffened Joints And Muscles:

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil), Glucosamine, Chondroitin sulfate, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), Green-lipped mussel, Fortetropin (fertilized chicken egg yolk powder), SOD (superoxide dismutase), Turmeric, Sea cucumber and ASU (avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, available as Dasuquin).

3. Medications:

When there is pain due to stiffness of muscles, NSAIDs may be prescribed.

  • Carprofen (rimadyl or novox).
  • Metacam (meloxicam).
  • EtoGesic (etodolac).
  • Previcox (firocoxib).
  • Grapipant (galliprant).

Muscle swelling and inflammation: Prednisone, prednisolone, betamethasone, and triamcinolone will be prescribed for a short duration.

4. Provide A Comfortable Place To Rest:

Make your dog more comfortable and safe at home. Pets’ beds should be placed in a shady area, away from direct light as light can hinder pets to sleep. For arthritic dogs, provide a comfortable fluffy bed and extra blankets. A hardwood floor may feel less comfortable. You can give them a bed with extra cushioning, carpets on the floor to lie on, and more.
