Garlic Toxicity In Dogs

In humans, garlic may be of great use in the treatment of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and digestive issues.

However, in dogs and cats, consuming even a little bit of garlic may lead to severe poisoning, which causes anemia and can be fatal. Garlic contains thiosulfate, which is highly toxic to dogs.

Thiosulfate damages the oxygen-carrying capacity of the red blood cells, which can cause hemolytic anemia.

Garlic is more concentrated with thiosulfates than an onion, both of which belong to the same family of allium. Scientists say that garlic is 5 times more toxic than an onion when it comes to this element.

Symptoms Of Garlic Toxicity In Dogs

If your pet has ingested garlic, anywhere from 15 to 30 grams, you may notice the symptoms of garlic toxicity after only two or three days. The symptoms include:

  • Weakness
  • Inactive
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Pale gums
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Red or brown urine (discolored)

Garlic Poisoning In Dog – Treatment

It is the early diagnosis of poisoning that is key to your pet’s treatment. A vet must be visited as soon as possible in order to prevent your dog from getting even sicker or dying.

Your vet may induce vomiting in your pet to clear the gastrointestinal system. They may administer intravenous fluid after initial improvement to have the animal regain strength. In extreme cases, a blood transfusion may be required.
