In search of his passion, August tried to cross various French and German hunting dogs with Bloodhounds.

The result was – Germany’s most popular dog- Weimaraner or Weimar Pointer.

The duke, initially, used these dogs in pursuits like wolves, mountain lion, and bear. With the passage of time, they found work as a Golden retriever who retrieves gamebirds.

This dog breed was kept as a secret in Germany but by 1920s, good litters began arriving in the United States.
